Chocolate Halfway Bars

Recipe Description

Recipe Ingredients

1 cup sifted flour
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon baking powder
½ cup soft shortening
¼ cup white sugar
¾ cup brown sugar
1 egg, separated
1 ½ teaspoons water
½ teaspoon vanilla
½ cup semi-sweet chocolate bits

Instructions

Preheat oven to 375°; grease 12 X 8 X 2 inch baking pan. Sift flour, salt, baking soda and baking powder. Cream shortening, white sugar and ¼ cup brown sugar until very light and fluffy. Add egg yolk, water and vanilla; mix well. Mix in flour mixture thoroughly. Pat into baking dish; top with chocolate bits. Beat egg white until stiff; gradually beat in the remaining ½ cup of brown sugar. Spread over chocolate. Bake about 25 minutes. Cut into 32 bars while warm. Cool in pan.
