Spanish Raisin Bars

Recipe Ingredients
1 cup raisins
1 ¼ cup water
½ cup vegetable shortening
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup sugar
½ teaspoon cloves
½ teaspoon cinnamon
1 egg, beaten
Instructions
Combine raisins, water and shortening in saucepan; cook for 5 minutes. Cool thoroughly (about ½ hour). Add egg and dry ingredients which have been sifted together; mix well. Spread in greased and floured 10 X 15 X 1 inch pan. Bake at 350° for 20 to 25 minutes. When cool, spread with favorite icing or top batter with chopped nuts before baking.
